Writing Assignment--Modern Culture Markers

This idea comes from Katherine Green, TVI, Department of Adult & Developmental Education, English Instructor

Consider the following words:
high heels waxed paper
polyester cordless telephone
Superman mascara
Twinkie centerfold
Crisco    Barbie doll
Tupperware Party computer chip
shag carpeting Darth Vader
TV dinner

Make a list of words that represent current American life. Write at least 50 items. These words have cultural significance; we understand them because they are part of our lives. Choose one or more of the items from your list and explain its cultural significance to someone of a vastly different background. How would you explain waxed paper to a Chinese peasant, or high heels to an African Bushman?

Using examples and illustrations, explain your object carefully. What kinds of people actually GO to Tupperware parties? Have you ever heard frightening tales of a Tupperware party going berserk?

Instead of complaining, easy sarcasm, or apathy, consider yourself a cultural guide; give a good-natured explanation. You do not necessarily need to approve of the item being described. While you will undoubtedly show your preference, judgements should be made on intellectual observation not merely stubbornness.
