What's Happening

The CNM Distance Learning Department has submitted the college’s application for an accreditation status change to allow us to offer additional online degrees.  Currently, the college is only accredited to offer one degree online, Associate of Arts in Business Administration.  The HLC is reviewing the application and will make a final determination of the status change in late-August.

BRIAN'S CORNER

Dear DL and Hybrid Courses Faculty,

This is an early reminder of the steps you need to take to assure a smooth transition into the Fall 2007 term.

Beginning with this next term, ALL course shells will be hosted on CE6, so if you haven’t gotten yourself familiar with the system now is the time to begin. It’s different, but a lot more user-friendly.

Here are the steps to properly arrange your course shell at the end of each term. As a reminder, I will send this message out via email in the next few weeks.

1.  As soon as your class is over or by August 6th back up your WebCT and/or Blackboard courses. Make sure you download the backups. You are only allowed one backup to reside in the queue, but you can download one, delete the one present in the queue and make another if you desire.

  • In WebCT: Go to Control Panel/Manage Course/Backup Course/Create Backup

  • In Blackboard CE6:  Go to Manage Course/Backup

2.  Make sure that your course will be available for self-registration by 8:00 AM on the day your class begins (Manage Course/Settings/User Manager/ Set Value True - to allow users to register themselves as a Student in a section).

The Blackboard access policy: All courses must be open for self registration, unless otherwise stated, on the first day of the term the course starts at 8am. Please note that if a course is not open for self registration, it either must be populated by 8am on the first day of that class, or a username and password must be sent to all students in the course so that they may add themselves to the course.

A note about multiple user accounts:  In WebCT, many of you were used to creating a secondary account in order to view the course shell as student does. This is no longer necessary in Blackboard since we now have this great tab called “student view.”  With that tab, we can now see the course shell exactly as the student does, we can take the quizzes and assessments as the student does and we can perform every other student function. So if you have created a secondary user account in Blackboard please let us know so we can coordinate the user names more efficiently.

Thank You

JoAnn Simpson
Business Management and Accounting student

JoAnn Simpson is an honor student who has taken more that twenty (20) Distance Learning classes at CNM.  She tells us that the Distance Learning Department has contributed to her success at CNM.

Here are a few answers JoAnn provided us in her interview.  Make sure you click on the link below to read the rest of the interview.

Question:   How did you first learn about Distance Learning at CNM?

Answer:

In the CNM schedule of classes and then I went to the advising and counseling department at CNM for more information.

Question: What have been the most valuable aspects of your Distance Learning experience?

Answer:

I can take my time with the class. I know ahead of time that I have an assignment due but I can work on it for an hour and take a break. With the lectures on video, I can pause and rewind when I need to. I can watch it however many times I need to. I can submit an assignment as soon as I have it done, even if it is 1am. My schedule is a lot more flexible with Distance Learning.

Images from the DL Celebration Days! at Main and JMMC

We celebrated the growth we have experienced in DL.  The events ocurred this past June 26 (Main) & June 27 (JMMC).  We met with both students and faculty and the cake sold quickly because the price was right!  Check out the images (click on the thumbnails to see the full image).

At Main Campus, Instructors Stephanie Umpleby (far left) and Kate Hovey (far right) joined Xeturah, Brian, and Rafael for some cake.

Rafael shows Brian his cake serving technique. The instructors are probably thinking "Do these guys know what they are doing?"

Math instructor Stephanie Umpleby turned out to be a satisfied customer.

at Main several students stopped by to get a FALL DL class schedule and have some cake.

For some reason, the cake at JMMC went out quickly. We had our display in the Commons Area.

ECA Instructor Linda Clay stopped by at JMMC. By then, Brian and Rafael were expert cake cutters.

Xeturah completes the transaction with a satisfied customer. After all the price was right!
