Announcements

Thank you for all you do to keep the enrollment growing in DL.  There has been no marketing campaign for DL courses and still our enrollment grows.  We now offer more online courses than any public institution in the State of New Mexico.  Our students are continually asking for more courses via this instructional method and our faculty members keep rising to the occasion.

DL Tools

Online Tutoring - now available!

Online Tutoring is now available for CNM students provided by Smarthinking.com.  Smarthinking, Inc. is an online tutoring service provider contracted by CNM to support our online students.

CNM student accounts are for 300 minutes of tutoring time per term. The following areas are supported:

Accounting Biology
Chemistry Economics
Mathematics Physics
Spanish Statistics
Writing Professional Writing

How does it work? Students login to their personal homepage from the Smarthinking website. From there they have a choice of methods to interact with Smarthinking's e-structors:

  • drop-in Live sessions (available 24-7 for Math)
  • prescheduled appointments
  • submitted questions or papers with a 24-hour turnaround
  • Academic resources are available free with your account
  • Click this link for More info about student accounts

How much does it cost? CNM pays Smarthinking so the service is free to our students. We are only billed for the actual tutoring time you use. You may use the practice whiteboard without charging minutes to your account.

Who can use it?
CNM Distance Learning students, as well as students at the South Valley and Westside campuses, in supported courses are pre-registered for a student account through the Assistance Centers for Education (ACE). Any other student may contact the coordinator (see below).

How can I find out more?
go to About your Account or contact the ACE Online Tutoring coordinator by phone at (505) 224-4308 or by email at randyc@cnm.edu.

Increasing Online Testing Security  Respondus LockDown Browser - Now Available!

Respondus LockDown Browser™ is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Blackboard. When students use Respondus LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, or access other applications. When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading. (Supports Windows and Mac OS X 10.3.9+.)

It only takes one click!  The LockDown Browser is activated on your Blackboard course when you click on Assessments (from Teach Tab) then Edit Properties to change the Security Settings.

Click here to view the Introduction to the LockDown Browser video

Click here for a Tutorial on Enabling the Lockdown Browser for a test

What about the students?  Do they need to do anything?  Yes, they need to load a plug-in on their computers (1-2 minutes installation).  The plug-in can be downloaded from:

http://www.respondus.com/lockdown/information.pl?ID=916915865

Please note there is a Windows and MacIntosh version.

NOTE:  The LockDown Browser is currently installed in the DL Testing Center (S-16 Main).  ITS will install the browser in all CNM Students Labs.  For more information, contact the ITS Learning Management Systems Administrator, John Warren at jwarren@cnm.edu

Student Spotlight

Cynthia Ramsey
Office Tech & Accounting Major

Cynthia is an Office Tech and Accounting student who has taken several Distance Learning classes at CNM.  She tells us that Distance Education has facilitated her return to College.

Here are a few answers Cynthia provided us in her interview.  Make sure you click on the link below to read the rest of the interview.

Question:   How did you first learn about Distance Learning at CNM?

Answer:

I initially first learned about Distance Learning in 1997 but I didn’t taken any DL classes until Spring of 2007.  I decided to take the DL courses because I live a good 30 minutes away from the nearest branch and it has been 10 years since I have been to college.

Question:    What have been the most valuable aspects of your Distance Learning experience?

Answer:

The most valuable aspects of Distance Learning Experience is that I can set aside family time, and I can create my own school schedule.  I must say that it is also a benefit that I don’t have to drive 30 minutes to school every day, and worry about parking spaces or gas prices!  Also, my boyfriend and I are always traveling so I can take school with me!
