Can you tell us about your background in education and distance learning?
Well, I graduated in 2006 with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice from New Mexico State. I was offered a position to design and teach criminal justice courses for the Dona Ana Community College. While teaching part-time for the college I pursued my Masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction, which I received in 2007. I continue to teach for the community college as an online instructor. I have experienced distance learning as both a student and an instructor throughout my education and professional career.
What brought you to CNM?
I enjoy working in a community college setting. With the experience I have in both distance learning and working at a community college, I decided the Distance Learning Department at CNM would be a great place to work.
What kind of work are you involved with at CNM?
I currently work with the Distance Learning Department as a support specialist. I am enjoying learning Blackboard, as well as all aspects of distance learning. The Distance Learning Department here at CNM has great learning opportunities for both faculty and students.
Have you worked with Blackboard/WebCT in the past? What were the
circumstances?
I have experience working with WebCT, through teaching at Dona Ana Community College, as well as being a student at NMSU. I took a variety of online courses, and this is my third semester teaching online WebCT courses. Although I have little experience using Blackboard I am currently learning more about it through this position.
What are your professional goals, and how does distance learning figure into
those goals?
Professionally, I would like to work with high school student’s possibly teaching criminal justice. Becoming an academic advisor for high school students is also another goal of mine. I would also like to continue teaching within the community college. I enjoy teaching online, and developing innovative ideas and strategies for online learners. I believe it is important to be creative and open to a variety of different methods when working in both a traditional and online setting. Distance learning is important to my professional goals because it is an area within education that is continually growing. There are a variety of educational possibilities provided for students, faculty, and communities that are provided through distance learning.
What do you do when you are not at work?
When I am not working I like to spend time with my fiancé, family, and friends. I also enjoy going to movies, and just relaxing.
Do you have anything else that you would like to share?
I would like to thank everyone in the Distance Learning Department for all of their help and making me feel welcome here at CNM. I am enjoying being part of the Distance Learning team, and I am excited to continue learning and working on different projects.
