Drop-In Labs Open for
All Faculty
As
part of the OIC course, we’ve scheduled drop-in lab times for the
participants in the OIC course. Until the end of the term, the labs are
as follows:
Thursdays,
3:00 pm – 5:00 pm in MS-101
Fridays,
9:00 am – 11:00 am in MS-102
Since
the class sizes are small this term, we’re opening up the drop-in labs for
all DL faculty members. If you want to drop-in to get some help with
WebCT, Respondus or other DL course issues, or just need some uninterrupted
computer time, please feel free to stop by.
Teaching Tips

Post Expectations In the
Beginning
On
the second or third day of the course, I like to post a message to my
students letting them know what they can expect from me for the rest of the
semester. I include information on the things they most care about:
- Grades
- E-mail
responses from me
- Assignment
due dates and times
I
also use it as an opportunity to remind them of my drop policy.
Remember, duplication is critical online. In the end, it makes a
difference for the students because they are well set-up for the rest of the
term. Click here to see and example of the message:

What to expect .

teaching tips and examples, check out the
Teaching Resource Center on the DL
website!
This online teaching tip was provided by Xeturah Woodley, Director of Distance
Learning. Xeturah has been teaching online for over 11 years . If you have a tip you would like to share in an upcoming
issue of the DL E-News, please send it to Jo Ann Bell at jbell35@cnm.edu. We will select one
or two tips per issue.

Faculty Spotlights
Biology online…Is that possible????
Ask this month's faculty spotlight
participants and they say "Yes, it is!"
This month's faculty spotlight shines on
two of CNM's DL Biology Professors, Mark Danley and Shawn Wright. We
asked them a few questions and here is what they had to say about teaching
online:

J. Mark Danley, MS
Question:
Mark, what courses do you teach online?
Answer:
BIO 139L-Human Anatomy & Physiology for non majors.
Question:
In addition to your online courses, have you used distance learning to
enhance your face to face courses?
Answer:
I use WebCT to enhance all my other courses in introductory biology, and
Majors Anatomy & Physiology lecture and labs
Question:
What do you like to do when you’re not teaching? (Hobbies)
Answer: I also enjoy spending time with my
partner and our 15-year-old son. We plan activities together whenever we
are all available, which can be difficult when dealing with our son’s
basketball practice or the restoration work he’s doing on his car.
Also, I
used to be a professional actor...

Shawn
Wright, MS
Question: Shawn, what
courses do you teach online?
Answer: Biology
239 - Microbiology,
Biology 123 - Introductory Biology for Health Science Majors;
and Biology 124L - Intro. Biology
Laboratory.
Question: What do you like to do when
you’re not teaching? (Hobbies)
Answer:
When not involved in school work I focus mostly on Gardening, raising
chickens and turkeys and Fly Fishing/Camping.
Question: As an online instructor,
what role do you see distance learning playing in the future education of
students?
Answer: I
have seen that this mode of delivery is extremely important for some of my
students. Their very busy lives leave them little time for the typical
structured lecture class. Online instruction gives them flexibility.
For my classes I have found
that I am able to provide my online students with an increased coverage of
many of the topics discussed in class. Since I do not have to “take time”
for the class discussion I can extend my lecture presentation of the
materials to be covered. I can take more time to develop and explain a
concept.
Working with Peter Hurley
and his staff I have been able to produce many videos of my lecture
materials and the students seem to find this material both interesting and
understandable….
