Life Skills Workshop
helps Student Services staff and
instructors teach students how to manage their time and money
Organizational
Learning is bringing the USA Funds Life Skills® workshop
to CNM from 8:30am-2:30pm, Wednesday, October 4, in Room 139, Workforce Training
Center (WTC). This workshop is a flexible educational program for Student
Services personnel and instructors designed to equip them to teach their
students to manage their time and money wisely while they are on campus and
after graduation.
The workshop covers these
five independent yet interrelated modules:
Module 1: Get a
Grip on Your Finances — Smart Spending for Students.
Module 2: Seek
out Financial Aid — Funding Resources and Financial Obligations.
Module 3: Work
Hard but Smart — How to Be Successful in School and Graduate on Time.
Module 4: Take
Control of Your Future — Finishing School and Repaying Your Loans.
Module 5: Now
That You Are About to Graduate — Taking Control of Your Life.

Microsoft Publisher tutorial:
"Get started designing your own professional publications"
The
Microsoft website offers some great tutorials to help users learn how to use
various Microsoft applications. This MS Publisher tutorial shows how you
can make professional-looking flyers, brochures, calendars, business cards, and
other documents quickly and easily using a variety of pre-designed publication
templates. The tutorial includes...
-
Three self-paced lessons and three practice sessions for hands-on
experience.
-
A short test at the end of each lesson; tests are not scored.
-
A Quick Reference Card you can take away from the course.
Although the tutorial takes 40-50 minutes to complete, it's self-paced, so
you can work on it when you the time. If you have speakers or a headset,
you can hear the audio portion as well. Here's the link:

Active learning in the
classroom: "How
about a quick one?"
"Of all instructional
methods, lecturing is the most common, the easiest, and the least effective.
Unless the instructor is a real spellbinder, most students cannot stay focused
throughout a lecture: after about 10 minutes their attention begins to drift,
first for brief moments and then for longer intervals; they find it increasingly
hard to catch up on what they missed while their minds were wandering; and
eventually they switch the lecture off altogether like a bad TV show."
So says Richard M. Felder, chemical engineering professor at North Caroline
State University, and he add, "There are
better ways. Actively involving students in learning instead of simply lecturing
to them leads to improved attendance, deeper questioning, higher grades, and
greater lasting interest in the subject." But aren't the other methods too
time-consuming? After all, all instructors have a lot of content to cover.
Click on the link below to read about two instructional methods that, Felder
says, don't take a lot of time but still get students engaged and actively
learning:

Last
chance to take Tools for Teaching this term
If you've been
considering signing up for the Tools for Teaching course, now's the time.
Seats are still available in the section scheduled to begin on Friday, September
22, at the Montoya Campus. This blended course meets for seven sessions in
the classroom and for five sessions online in WebCT, but you need no prior
knowledge of WebCT because the first three classroom sessions will include a
WebCT orientation and practice on the WebCT program. One former Tools for
Teaching participant explained the value of the course like this: "It's
one of the best learning experiences I've ever had."
To register for this course--for
which part-time instructors will be paid to attend the classroom sessions--call
Jean Montaño at 224-4400 or email her at jmontano@cnm.edu.
