4 Effective Meeting Skills:  Take this Online Learning course offered through Organizational Learning

Ever been part of a meeting that felt like a waste of time or that ended in conflict without resolution? If so, and if you'd like to learn how to make meetings more productive, consider taking this online, interactive training course, based on the book Effective Meeting Skills by Marion E. Haynes, to learn how to plan and participate in more effective meetings.  The one- to two-hour course "includes exercises and checklists as well as examples and case studies to help you plan, conduct, and improve any meeting, on or offsite. You'll learn how to spot and avoid meeting problems in advance, how to handle conflict and digression, and how to improve future meetings through evaluation and feedback."

Find out more about this and many other courses offered online through the Division of Organizational Learning:  http://cnm.onlineexpert.com/elearning/  Click on "Course Catalog" to view other courses or click "Contact Us" to sign up for "Effective Meeting Skills."

4At-your-desk learning:  MS Outlook can take the frustration out of scheduling meetings

How many times have you tried to schedule a meeting with four, five, or more people at CNM?  It's usually a frustrating task--so many people, so many different time slots, so few available.  MS Outlook--both the full-blown version on CNM employees' computers and the web version available online from off campus--can make the task of scheduling a lot less frustrating by letting you view others' free and busy time slots on their calendars.

Those who use the full version of MS Outlook can complete the "Organize Meetings with Outlook" online workshop at

http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC011659751033 to learn how to...

  • Set up a meeting, see who's coming, make changes, and keep everyone updated.

  • Manage and respond to meeting requests.

If you use Outlook available on the web at http://owa.cnm.edu, you can learn how to plan meetings by clicking on HELP in the Outlook tool bar near the top of the screen.  From HELP, find CALENDAR in the list of topics, and click on PLANNING MEETINGS.

4Active learning in the classroom:  "The Great Question Press"
"Try the Question Press on standard content and watch your students squeeze meaning out of inert matter.  Give them a lift. Engage them in making up their own minds. Equip them to manage the tough questions of life." That's what this article on the "FNO (From Now On) Educational Technology Journal website promises, listing a range of question "functions," listed below, from which instructors can fashion demanding questions based on their own course content on which to create assignments and classroom activities. The article offers example questions for each of these functions:

  • Build or invent

  • Persuade or convince

  • Challenge or destroy

  • Wonder

  • Understand

  • Acquaint
  • Decide
  • Dismiss
  • Figure out
  • Predict
