Organizational Learning's News YOU Can Use, March 5, 2007

A weekly e-newsletter from CNM's Organizational Learning Division with training and development ideas and opportunities for all employees

"Few teachers truly understand the effect which they have on their students. Fewer yet give much thought to the tremendous damage which their actions and attitudes often have. Our problem as educators is that far too often we begin the academic year worrying more about our courses and about our academic responsibilities than about our student, those fragile human beings who sit across from us and stare, waiting to learn and eager to know."

--Frank Pajare

4Defensive driving recertification offered March 9

As you may know, anyone who drives a CNM vehicle, whether regularly or only rarely, must be certified to do so by completing the Defensive Driving Certification course.  The certification is good for three years and then must be renewed.  If you need to be recertified, now is the time to do so.  A Defensive Driving Recertification course is being offered March 9 at the Workforce Training Center.  To register, visit this webpage:

4Accessing Online Images for Instruction--and for other purposes as well

Mary Bates Ulibarri, CHSS art instructor, will teach the first in a series of three learnshops on "Digital Visual Resources for Instruction" in March and April. Participants in the first workshop on March 14 entitled "Accessing Online Images for Instruction" will learn

  • how to
    • use internet search engines
    • locate online image collections and use searching strategies to locate desired images
    • evaluate search results for availability for educational use
    • create a list of links for access to protected images
    • evaluate image quality for the  intended purpose;
    • organize images and store images for later use in presentation;
    • capture, organize and store the identification information
    • capture, organize and store source information/documentation

4Still time to sign up for the March 30 Student Success Initiative, Part 3
There's still time to register!  Part 3 of the year-long Student Success Initiative is designed to celebrate and encourage our own “best practices” at CNM. This half-day conference will provide an opportunity for faculty and instructional staff to share ideas about learning strategies that promote success for our students. 4At-your-desk learning: Quiz--Are you a digital packrat?
"Is your desktop cluttered with so many shortcuts that you can't find anything? Are there so many files on your hard drive that you constantly run out of hard disk space? If so, you may be a digital packrat. Take this quiz to see how you rate; then see the answers for tips on how to clean up and get organized."

4Productivity Primer:  "How to be productive" at work and at home
"How hard do you work? Do you work hard or do you work smart? Many people work very hard but never seem to get the things accomplished they need to in order to meet their goals. The first step to working smart is to admit that even though you have a lot to do, you will NOT get it all finished. Realize that 'you can't do it all' and don't let that fact frustrate you."
