Active learning strategies for f2f and online courses
Look over the
Active Learning Online website for active learning
assignments, techniques, and strategies you can use for
both
traditional face-to-face (f2f) and
online classes.
This site also explains
why active learning is so important for student learning
and what it takes to make learning active.
7-Second Survey
Last week,
fourteen instructors replied to the 7-Second
Survey, anwering this question--"Have you ever
contacted Security because of a student's
threatening or disruptive behavior in the
classroom at CNM?"
View the results of this survey.
This week's
anonymous survey of CNM faculty deals with
classroom security and seeks to find out how many
CNM instructors have had to obtain help from
Security to deal with unruly student behaviors.

Joke of the Week
The auto mechanic asks the
cardiologist, "Why do you make so much more money? We both
use our hands to fix things."
The cardiologist replies, "Try
doing it while it's running."
Quotation
"A word as to the education of
the heart. We don't believe that this can be imparted through
books; it can only be imparted through the loving touch of the
teacher."

Mastering
Camtasia
"You're about to see just
how fast and easy it is to
create razor-sharp,
compelling screencast [i.e., web] videos with Camtasia Studio
4."
That's what Chris Austin promises
from his free
Mastering Camtasia tutorial. You'll need to first
complete the online form on this webpage and then check your
email--twice--to complete the free registration. Once you've
done that, you'll be able to access the tutorial.
If you're not sure why you'd want
to learn Camtasia,
view this sample Camtasia video that explains its
educational capabilities.
If the tutorial and the sample
video convince you that you'd like to learn how to use this
software, then you can take Greg Casaus'
workshop,
Camtasia 1, on Friday, June 15, 1:00-3:00pm, in the
Technology Education Center (TEC), S-21, Main Campus.
Register on the Organizational Learning Summer Calendar.
If you have questions about this
workshop, you can email Greg at
gcasaus6@cnm.edu.
Productivity Primer
Stress from a looming deadline or an upcoming presentation can
undermine your productivity and the quality of your work.
A tool for managing stress,
described on the Mind Tools website, is imagery. With
it, you can "use your imagination to recreate and enjoy a
situation that is very relaxing." This kind of imagery can help
you de-stress and reduce stress' negative effects on your body.
"You can also use imagery in
rehearsal before a big event, allowing you to run through the
event in your mind," thus preparing for it and imagining a
successful outcome. "This is
a technique used very commonly by top sports people, who learn
good performance habits by repeatedly rehearsing performances in
their imagination."
Read more about how to use imagery to reduce stress.
Need to get your CNM driver re-certification? It's
easier now
Organizational
Learning offers defensive driving workshops to certify
all CNM staff and faculty who drive CNM vehicles. And it
also offers re-certification workshops.
Now Organizational
Learning is offering a recertification workshop—the first one
scheduled on Friday, June 22, beginning at 9:00am—that
will allow most participants to complete the
re-certification process in two hours or less, unlike
the former workshop that took three or more hours.
To find out more, contact
Greg Casaus at 224-4244 or email him at
gcasaus6@cnm.edu.

Workshop.

Last chance
to attend the On Course Workshop on June 6-8
Some last-minute
cancellations have opened up a few seats in the On Course
Workshop this Wednesday through Friday. Call Jean Montaño
at 224-4400 right away if you would like to attend this event,
which
will run from 8:30am-5:00pm on all three days.
The workshop promises to be an
exceptional event based on the
comments
of several past On Course participants, including Susan Cordova,
ECA Science instructor, who encourages all instructors to attend
this workshop, "which may be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Skip Downing is getting 'rock star' fame in the educational
community, and it took a LOT of effort to get him to come here
personally. I have met him and heard him speak, and he is
absolutely amazing! He focuses on student success from many
different angles, including student responsibility and
overcoming obstacles to succeed in the classroom. Many of his
ideas can be used in any classroom."
Change of location
The workshop location has
changed from CNM's Main Campus to
UNM Continuing Education,
North Building,
Conference Room H,
1634 University Blvd, SE, on the northeast corner of Indian
School and University. (View
a map.)
