These programs are developed by Annenberg Media, which "uses media and telecommunications to advance excellent teaching in American schools. This mandate is carried out chiefly by the funding and broad distribution of educational video programs with coordinated Web and print materials for the professional development of K-12 teachers. It is part of The Annenberg Foundation and advances the Foundation's goal of encouraging the development of more effective ways to share ideas and knowledge."

7-Second Survey
What strategy (or strategies) have you used and found effective to entice--or coerce--students to keep coming to class, class after class, week after week?

Thanks for your feedback. The results will be posted next week in this e-newsletter.

Last week, a mere three instructors replied to the 7-Second Survey, answering this question--"What kinds of trainings and workshops would you like to see offered through Organizational Learning during the Fall 2007 term (August-December)?
Read their responses..

Productivity Primer
Most of us have to read to stay current in our jobs.  In fact, many of us are deluged with printed or digital matter that we need to read each day.  One way to keep on top of this reading is to learn how to speed read.

This article, "Speed Reading: Radically Increasing Your Reading Speed," on the Mind Tools website explains the techniques of speed reading:

  • Increase the number of words read in each "block" of text
  • Reduce the length of time spent reading each block
  • Reduce the number of times your eyes skip back to a previous sentence

Like any skill, speed reading takes practice--and practice will make you, if not perfect, at least a faster reader.

MS Office 2007 training will begin in late July
CNM staff and faculty who are currently using Office 2003 will be able to get training in Microsoft Office 2007 through Organizational Learning by late July.  This information comes from Greg Casaus, director. You can contact Greg for more information at 224-4244 or email him at gcasaus6@cnm.edu.

The training coincides with the installation of Office 2007 in academic computer labs during the term break prior to the beginning of the Fall 2007 term.  Gina Rodriguez, academic technology support manager for Information Technology Services (ITS) says that Office 2007 will then be installed on all office computers during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Gina adds that staff andGina Rodriguez faculty who need--or want--to learn to use Office 2007 prior to the Fall 2007 term can sign up to participate in the Early Adopters Program and arrange to have the software installed on their office computers.  Once the Fall 2007 term begins, CNM employees can simply contact the Help Desk at 224-HELP and ask that the software be installed.

According to Gina, Windows Vista-- the latest Microsoft operating system software that will replace Windows XP currently installed on all CNM computers--won't be installed during  Fall 2007 because of compatibility issues between Vista and Banner as well as Passport. "So we’re waiting for Sungard [Banner] and Luminis [Passport] to certify that their products are compatible with Vista" before it is installed on CNM computers--possibly for Spring 2008.

New and improved courses offered this fall for CNM teachers and teachers-to-be
Two courses offered through Organizational Learning are being revamped and improved and will be ready for the Fall 2007 term:

Instructors Pre-Certification Course
Organizational Learning Director Greg Casaus reports: "For those of you who are wondering, pre-certification materials are being revised, and the first class will be available mid to late July.  Stay tuned for further details."

The Instructors Pre-Certification Course is designed for people who are content experts due to job experience who want to teach at CNM but who have little or no experience teaching.  The course helps them prepare to teach at CNM.

Tools for Teaching:
This course is also being upgraded, according to Eleanor Radius, new Organizational Learning director.  For one thing, Eleanor says, it's being shortened from a 12-week to an 8-week course.  And it's being modularized--that is, the course content will be presented as modules. The course will be continue to be delivered as a hybrid course--some in-class meetings and some online assignments and participation in Blackboard.

Joke of the Week

A teacher took her third-grade class on a nature trail through the woods. She stopped by a tree and said, "Brian, can you tell me what the outer part of a tree is called?"

"I don't know, Ms. Jones," said Brian.

"Bark, Brian, bark!" said Ms. Jones.

"Okay," said Brian. "Woof! Woof!"
