ECA's Mentoring Program

Janice Hart of ECA reported that their
last mentoring group was the largest group they have had to date, with 57 Mentees and 11 Mentors (Fall '06).

At the close of the semester participants were surveyed to monitor the program's success.  Feedback provided by both Mentees and Mentors indicated that the program continues to be a success.

Of the Mentors' many positive responses to the question which asked them what they gained from mentoring, a typical comment spoke of, "... excitement, energy and renewed love for teaching."

In the Mentees' responses to this question, a predominance of answers referred to gains related to "[having] an outlet for discussing situations that arose, getting support and having a resource for questions."  The second most common response was the gain in understanding procedures and policies.  Many responses described "finding a home" in ECA, being able to connect with ECA faculty and staff and "... a positive introduction to CNM," as well as more confidence in beginning their ECA careers.  Other responses discussed acquiring teaching methods, materials and ideas, gaining knowledge of ECA students and also of professional development.

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

Conventional versus Integrative Thinking
In an article Roger Martin at HBR.org writes about how successful leaders think.  He believes when responding to problems or challenges, leaders work through four steps. Those who are conventional thinkers seek simplicity along the way are often forced to make unattractive trade-offs. By contrast, integrative thinkers welcome complexity - even if it means repeating one or more of the steps - and this allows them to craft innovative solutions.

2       a
Analyzing Causality
3      a
Envisioning the Decision Architecture
4
Achieving Resolution
Conventional Thinkers Focus only on obviously relevant features Consider one-way, linear relationships between variables, in which more of A produces more of B Break problems into pieces and work on them separately or sequentially Make either-or choices; settle for best available options
Integrative Thinkers Seek less obvious but potentially relevant factors Consider multidirectional and nonlinear relationships among variables See problems as a whole, examining how the parts fit together and how decisions affect one another Creatively resolve tension among opposing ideas; generate innovative outcomes

Calendar of Professional Development Events

We are currently in the process of compiling a master list of professional development conferences and events for the faculty and staff at CNM.  We started the process by contacting the Travel Coordinators for a list of event from the past fiscal year.

If you have attended a noteworthy professional development conference or workshop that should be on the list, please email Eleanor Radius with the name of the event, topic and url with general information.

Once we have compiled the list we will make it available on our website and notify you.
