Teaching Excellence
Share ideas of what CNM
can do on the journey of Continuous Improvement
As
Faculty and Staff we teach subject matter to our
students, but we also carry the responsibility of
teaching them other critical skills; leadership,
teamwork, planning, project management and communication
to name a few. It is always exciting when we can create
opportunities to mentor students so that they can learn
these critical skills.
Lisa Orick-Martinez and her students assisted the
board of the International Listening Association (ILA)
in planning for their
March
2008
International Conference to be held
in in Portland, Maine. She formed a team
with the students from her Small Group Communication
Studies class last Fall, along with a group of students
from TRIO’s TAG (TRIO Achievement Group) and the ILA
board members.

Lisa Orick-Martinez and students
The
students from her class interacted with board members
from all over the world via email, telephone calls and
blogging to complete the conference
planning. They provided their insights and creativity.
Students designed the conference logo and
website, wrote the letters of acceptance for the
programs and helped to market the call for papers and
the 2008 ILA International Conference. The TAG students
designed the program, created original art work for the
official program cover, and contacted local businesses
for donations for the silent auction and registration
packets.
During
this collaborative project, the students learned
teamwork, leadership, and facilitation skills.
They gained valuable experience in intercultural
diversity and in the use
of technology in a professional environment.
One of
Lisa’s students submitted a paper on Listening based on
her experiences in Service Learning working with CASA.
She has been invited to present her paper at the
Convention this March.
This
innovative approach of including students in this
project helped them to learn and apply skills in a real
world environment.
Productivity Primer
What are you doing to cultivate innovation?
If innovation is one of the skills
needed in the 21st century, for us and our students,
then what are we doing to foster the necessary
skills? Here are a few items to help layout what we mean
by innovation:
-
Focused creativity
-
Often requires Strategic Intuition (combining of
many ideas)
-
Often is team based
-
Often requires paradigm shifting or creating a
tipping point
-
Requires a higher level skills that the skills
previously required in an industrial or knowledge
economy
-
Right & Left brain working together to produce
creative, out of the box thinking, problem solving,
critical thinking and analytical thinking
