Support Networks

College students today often have to balance the demands of their school work along with their jobs, families, personal life and other unique demands.  In alignment with our goal to expand CNM’s caring approach to student success, Suzanne Prescott PhD from CHSS, has set out to help students build their support network.

Suzanne  integrated an assignment into her Sociology class to help her students through the process of asking for and accepting support.  Early in the semester the students are provided a draft of a support request letter that they give to the individuals of their choice whom could help to provide them with support.  The letters are often given to family, friends, associates and managers.  The types of support that students are often given include: household chores, baby sitting, providing alone time for studying, flexible work scheduling, use of a computer and emotional support or encouragement.  Suzanne has tracked the students’ responses to the assignment from 4 of her sociology classes and 59 students were able to locate 103 sources of promised support.

Her students are often surprised and overwhelmed by the response they get to the letters. Here is one student’s response from this semester:

Subject: Support Networking

Topic: Wk3 Support Letter

Author: Student

Date: January 30, 2008 7:31 PM

"I printed the letter and although I completely agreed with it, I didn't really expect the reaction I received from my 15 year old. You see, she understands that I've been working on an associate's degree for about four years now and I figured she'd just react like she usually does when I ask her for some extra help around the house with minor chores. So, I handed it to her and walked away--asking her to read it. Boy was I wrong! The next day when I got home from work, she had cleaned the house spotless and had prepared a salad for her siblings. After I thanked her and gave her a huge hug, she explained that it made sense and although she knew I worked hard, reading the letter made "my sacrifice" a lot clearer to her. She promised to not complain from here on......I'm keeping my fingers crossed!"

This integrated activity teaches her students to expand and integrate support strategies that result in their individual student success.  It also helps students learn the life skill of how to build and use their support network for future success.

Suzanne presented her findings related to the success of the assignment at NMHEAR 2007. For additional information see attached document.

Productivity Primer

In this month's newsletter you've read about an exercise in how students are building their support network.  Hopefully you have thought about your support network.  Are you getting the support you need from those around you?  How are you doing with at taking care of yourself?  What are you doing to support and nourish yourself?  Are you making the time and space to truly take care of yourself?

These are important questions to answer because often when we are busy this becomes an easy thing to neglect.  Our time is spread thinly across all the items we have to get done, and the balance of time we spend busy versus doing what we desire can be thrown out of whack.  If this is the case it may be a good time to revisit this aspect of your life.

  1. Create a list of 15 things you love to do, things that you would be doing if you weren't so busy.
  2. Then go down the list and add the last time you allowed yourself to do these things.  Put a date next to each item.

You may find some are recent and some activities have gone into hibernation for years.  Don't be discouraged.

Choose a few items on your list that you really want to incorporate into your life.  Try to carve out some time in the next week to treat yourself to one or two of these.  If the item would take too long that try to break it down into smaller items that are closely related to the activity. Sometimes just carving out 15-30 minutes for this is a great source of rejuvenation.  Best wishes and have fun!

So, you need to research a topic.  Where do you start?  What can the CNM library offer?  Can I search for periodicals online?

The best place to begin your research is through your very own CNM library system. But wait you can't get to campus right away.   Subscription Databases provide an efficient means for finding Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper articles, as well as other reference information.  CNM has access to about 12 subscription databases*, all of which are searchable online.  To access these databases from off-campus, you will need to have a username and password. You may fill out the Online Password Request Form to obtain these.  If you have any further questions, please visit the CNM Library home page or contact a reference librarian via email at reference@cnm.edu.

*The New Mexico State Library and General Obligation Bond provides funding for the CNM Library and you to use ~12 subscription databases.
