Teaching Excellence
Share ideas of what CNM can do on the journey of Continuous Improvement

MSE Book Conversations

Rich Calabro. Interim Dean of MSE, came up with the idea to implement “Book Conversations” with the MSE faculty as a means of professional development for the school of MSE.  Their goal is to create a forum in which faculty is more thoroughly engaged in conversations on teaching excellence.  Last semester, Rich and Tamra Mason (Interim Associate Dean of MSE) kicked off the pilot of Book Conversations by scheduling weekly open forums.  Faculty would read a chapter of a book related to Teaching Excellence and drop in to one of the two hour sessions to engage in conversation about teaching excellence.

In Spring 08, MSE’s 45 FT faculty members along with 6-7 PT faculty members, the Dean and Associate Dean participated in Book Conversations on Ken Bain’s “What the Best College Teachers Do” in a venue to increase their understanding of the practices that can transform Faculty from good teachers to master teachers.

What the Best College Teachers do

Faculty member Brian Sailer called the book conversations, “a wonderful experience to discuss best teaching practices in a collegial atmosphere where all opinions were valued."

Throughout the semester Rich has captured notes on all of the conversations and has rolled up the common themes.  He plans to report out these common themes during the summer semester.  MSE also plans to continue their book conversations on what the best college teachers do throughout summer and fall of 2008.

Blogging
You may have heard about blogs, but have you ever wondered how they are being used in higher education?  Is there really a way to integrate blogs in order to further teaching and learning?  The University of Houston has outlined a few uses of blogging in education at http://awd.cl.uh.edu/blog/

Local uses of blogs:  Here at CNM over the past 2 semesters several students in the Online Instructor Certification (OIC) class have used the medium of a blog in order to make their reflection papers available to the instructor.

Read more on educational blogs and decide for yourself if blogging can be integrated into the practice of teaching and learning.
