Collecting Student Learning Results

In July eLumen visited CNM and provided a demonstration and overview of their Achievement™ software which is a tool for managing student achievements, learning outcomes and education results.  It is specifically designed to facilitate assessment processes that are: faculty driven, student learning-centered, and standards-based.

Julie Luna, of Planning Budget and Institutional Research (PBIR), reports that this software has a lot of potential in supporting CNM's collection and transparency of student learning outcomes.  This tool would allow faculty to set the standards and levels of achievement in any area, grade and enter the evaluation results of student work and the student could also view the results.  This would allow students and faculty to view progress in an area over time.  In addition it would allow faculty to view archived results in an area for a current student in order to see how a student performed prior to their class.

Julie points out that the eLumen software would provide a central location for student learning outcomes data at the class level and program level, making it readily accessible and available for comparisons over time.

Ultimately, if this data was available it would help CNM to measure the overall success of learning outcomes for the college as a whole.

The 4 C's of Customer-Focused Solutions

When offering customer-focused solutions have you considered the following:

Coordination – providing channel(s) for customer-related information sharing, division of labor and decision making to occur across boundaries.  Removing the historic “silos” and replacing with a focus on the customer.

Cooperation – Fostering a culture of customer-focused cooperation.  Indicators that measure customer satisfaction and incentives that reward customer-focused behavior.

Capability – 2 kinds of generalist skills. 1. experience with more than one product or service and deep knowledge of customer needs. 2. ability to traverse internal boundaries.  Establish clear career pathways for generalists.

Connection – Connecting with external partners.  Creating higher-value solutions by combining offerings with a complementary partner.
