Making the Move to a Hybrid Class
Matthias Pleil, a faculty member from the NSF funded
Southwest Center for Microsystems Education (SCME)
here at CNM, instructs classes for students
on Micro
Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) - silicon chips
with very small, mechanical moving parts that
function as sensors and actuators. Up to 50% of his
students are from the field of high technology
and/or the
SmallTech industry currently working as
technicians, engineers or operators. Since a large
number of students were working he wanted to offer
them a hybrid MEMS class that could fit into their
busy schedule and still accomplish the desired
learning outcomes.
To
get started in the design of his class, Matthias
took both the Making the Move to a Hybrid and the
Online Instructor Certification courses this past
summer. He designed a semester-long hybrid
Introduction to
MEMS class that combines online sessions
that discuss and go over theory with face-to-face
sessions that include hands on activities to ensure
the application of the learning. He also enhanced
the online experience by creating video files for
auditory and visual learners.
Matthias knew this was a huge undertaking since he
was taking the Hybrid class in the summer and his
goal was to offer his first hybrid MEMS class in
Fall '07. He spent most of his development time
re-designing his course materials for the online
sessions and including materials developed for the
SCME. The result was he achieved his aggressive
goal of developing his new hybrid class in the
summer and released it for the Fall 07 semester.
His hunch about students preferring a hybrid class
seems to be on the mark. His new class has more
students enrolled than in his previous traditional,
on ground classes. Matthias stated, "I really like
this [hybrid] approach and I have been able to reach
a larger audience." In this successful example the
hybrid class solution made the class more accessible
to the target audience. Since the
implementation of this hybrid class he has received
two inquiries from out of state residents who
would like to attend.
