Enhancing Classroom Learning with Podcasting

For the past year, Brian Sailer of MSE has been offering Podcasting to enhance his Biology classes. He currently has 2 classes that he makes Podcasts available for his students.  He's done Podcasting for a total of 8 classes and 2 sections of labs since last Spring.  I caught up with Brian to ask him a few questions about Podcasting so we could share this information.

Q. What led you to start providing the Podcasts for your classes?

A. I personally listen to a large number of Podcasts on a regular basis, and was exposed to many that were produced by faculty at other institutions. I realized that I had all the necessary equipment, so I decided to give it a try a year ago. The response was great, so I've continued to record and publish each lecture for my 200 level lecture and lab courses.

Q. What has the student response been to having the Podcasts available for your classes?

A. The student response has been very good. In fact, students seem to be paying more attention in class, now that they are not totally focused on writing down every word I say. In cases where a student has to miss class due to illness or other factors, having the audio online has been a major help. Many students have bought their first iPod just to listen to my lectures, even though they will work on any computer or mp3 player. Often faculty may have the perception that if they add Podcasts to their classes then students will stop coming to class, but this has not been the case.

Q. Do you have any tips for CNM faculty wanting to add Podcasting to their teaching toolkit?

A. The number one hurdle was finding a hosting site for the files, as they are quite large. CNM does not have space available on their servers for this purpose, so I currently use a free site, and can point interested faculty to the site if they contact me. Secondly, it does require some simple html coding to create the .xml files (for the subscription). But, once you get the files written properly, it is a simple cut-and-paste operation in the future. Third, get a good microphone. I have tried several microphones that plug straight into my iPod and they all work well. If a person has a 2nd generation iPod Nano or newer, or a 5th generation iPod or newer, the recording software is built-in, so only a microphone is needed that plugs into the dock connector. The other benefit of using the iPod is that the audio files transfer automatically to iTunes on your computer when you plug it in, and you can do the conversion to .mp3 format in iTunes also. You will need a fast internet connection at home, as CNM doesn't currently allow the uploading of files this large to external sites.

Productivity Primer

Tony Schwartz often speaks about time as a finite resource and the effects of working long hours for extended periods of time.  He does point out that energy is different story.  If employees are able to recharge themselves and avoid energy depleting behaviors they can be more effective (during regular working hours) while their energy levels are up.

He maintains a holistic view of the employee and outlines that energy comes from four main wellsprings within the person:

  • the body (physical energy)
  • emotions (quality of energy)
  • the mind (focus of energy)
  • the spirit (energy of purpose)

He has worked with many companies to effectively create energy renewal programs in which the organization puts an emphasis on investing in their employees, which in turn motivates the individuals to bring more of themselves to work each day.

His tips are simple and can be integrated over time.  They include: getting enough sleep regularly, eating healthy and exercising regularly to keep up physical energy.

Cultivating positive emotions by looking at the stories they tell themselves about the events in their life.  Look for the positive stories and maintain those.  Practice expressing appreciation to others as a method to fuel positive emotions.

Try to plan your workday so you can focus for blocks of time (90-120 mins.) on complex work. Integrate brief breaks. He maintains that constant distractions can be costly to your productivity.

And finally, when working on energy of the human spirit people need know their strengths and leverage them to get the job done, allocate time and energy to all aspects of their lives (work, family, health, community service) and make sure they are living their core values every day.
