Central New Mexico Community College CNM Organizational Learning
Diversity

Diversity is specifically stated as one of the college’s 12 core values. This program–the Diversity Institute–recognizes that a diverse learning environment enhances the educational experience for both students and campus personnel.  Diverse exposure improves an individual’s perspective and interaction skills and helps to create a welcome and inclusive environment. Students emerge better prepared to live and work effectively in different cultural contexts.

Diversity, Equity, and Culture at CNM:

An Introductory Workshop
This workshop introduces diversity and cross-cultural competence, particularly as it pertains to the College.  This workshop will begin a dialog and explore by means of interactive experiences such topics as race, ethnicity, culture, class, language, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.  In particular, this workshop will focus on the layers of diversity, stereotyping, labeling, and demographic data.  Participants will begin to reflect on how they can positively affect the culture of the College. To encourage a diverse group, we invite all employees-both faculty and staff-to attend.  No prior knowledge of the topics is necessary.

About the Diversity Institute

What is it?  The Diversity Institute is a formal initiative at CNM that aims to build on previous work in equity and diversity at the College.  The Diversity Institute (DI) is a part of Organizational Learning.

Why was this institute formed?   The DI is being developed to address the need for more meaningful interactions at the College, between divisions and across work classifications, as well as across lines of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, class, religion, ability, and age.

Who is invited?  Every employee at CNM is invited to participate: all faculty and staff from every division and every work classification.

When will it start?  The first two workshops are being offered this spring, with more activities planned for the Fall term and subsequent terms, including seminars and retreats in addition to more workshops.
